The NEH Summer Institute is hosted by the Institució Milà i Fontanals, the Barcelona branch of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Spain’s national council of research.
The IMF was founded in 1968 in order to centralize the various Humanities centers of the CSIC located in Barcelona. At present it has two departments: Anthropology & Archeology, and Historical Sciences (including Medieval Studies, Musicology and the History of Science). Its research library is the best in Catalonia and one of the best in Spain for the study of the Medieval Mediterranean.
Its research faculty work in seven areas of specialization, including:
- Archeology of Social Dynamics
- Socio-Ecological Dynamics and Complexity
- Social Identity and Cultural Pluralism
- The Mediterranean and the Crown of Aragón: History, Language and Cutlure
- Medical and Scientific Culture in Urban Spaces: Practices, Objects and Interchanges
- Music and Society
- Recuperation of Musical Historical Patrimony
The Institució has graciously agreed to provide us with space for our lectures and seminars as well as access to their library facilities. It is located in the old city of Barcelona at c/ Egipciaques, 15, right beside the medieval Hospital de Sant Pau (which houses both the National Library of Catalonia and the Institut d’Estudis Catalans). It is about a 15–20 minute walk from the Summer Institute’s official accommodation, Barcelona Resident.
NEH Participants will have the opportunity to meet IMF researchers; several participants of previous NEH Institutes have embarked on collaborations with local scholars.
Unless otherwise noted, all Institute activities take place at the IMF.
